Spring Semester Happenings

Beta Alpha’s had another busy semester at the University of Pennsylvania!  From formals, to philanthropy events, to late night study sessions, our sisters have worked hard for their summer breaks!

Rush    After resting up over the winter holidays, our sisters were excited to reunite for rush!  HUGE thanks to Cam and the rest of the recruitment team for all their hard work in recruiting such an awesome PC’14!

Hoedown-town      Beta Alpha introduced our new pledge class in style, by hosting the first ever “Hoedown-town” at Azure Nightclub in Center City.  Sisters arrived clad head-to-toe in pigtails, plaid, and cowboy boots.  We had so much fun getting to know our new little sisters!

PC’14 sisters (and roommates!) Hope and Hayley celebrate their bids at the Hoedown!

Big/Little Week   The best week of the year finally arrived!!  After weeks and weeks of Owl Pal coffee dates, our sophomore sisters finally got their Littles!  They worked into the wee hours of the morning all week, crafting signs and baking treats for their beloved Littles.  All week long, PC’14 was treated to all sorts of surprises and clues about their mystery Bigs.  After a week filled with anticipation, Reveal Night finally came, and the Littles were welcomed into their lineages!

Amanda, Lauren, and Nicole welcome Littlest Nadya to the lineage in style

Ronnie, Haley, and Alex welcome Elise (and their special owl friend) to the nest!

Snow Days!!   Philadelphia spent most of the winter buried under several feet of snow, but that couldn’t keep Beta Alpha down!  Penn was treated to a couple surprise snow days and school delays, giving sisters ample time to play in the snow!

Jackie, Neha, Janina, and Mimi introduce Arizona-native Bhavi to the joys of a snow day

Spring Break     After a very cold and very busy start to the semester, Beta Alpha was ready for spring break!  Sisters jetted off together in search of some much needed sunshine and R&R.

Sara, Lindsey, Joey, Serena, Meryam, and Leah prepare to leave Penn for New Orleans!

Saint Patrick’s Day      Penn’s Spring Break schedule didn’t stop Beta Alpha from celebrating Saint Paddy’s!  The holiday was the perfect opportunity for sisters to meet up after our week apart and share spring break stories!

Anna, Ally, and Dani celebrate the luck of the Chirish!

ChiOlympics           The first weekend of April skies means just one thing to Beta Alpha sisters…philanthropy!  Philanthropy chairs Mimi and Maylynn put their heads together all winter and introduced Penn’s campus to our revamped spring philanthropy event: Chi Omega’s First Annual ChiOlympics!  Teams made up of sister reps, frat brothers, performing arts groups, friends, family, and roommates competed in a variety of competitions including blindfolded musical chairs, water balloon tosses, and a giant inflatable obstacle course!  Prizes were donated from vendors around campus, and included gift cards to campus restaurants, an X-Box, and much more!  Proceeds from the event were donated to Chi Omega’s national philanthropy, the Make-A-Wish Foundation!

Big/Little duo Mikayla and Alyssa

Sisters Abroad        Several sisters showed their “ChiO, wherever you go” spirit this semester, as they jet-setted off across the globe to study abroad.  Sisterhood chairs Blake and Dani organized care packages filled with ChiO gear and love notes to show these sisters just how much Penn missed them!  We can’t wait to hear all about your adventures (and see LOTS and lots of pictures) when you come home!

Ella says hello from Florence, Italy!

Greek Week           Another April favorite came and went…Greek Week!  Sisters proudly wore their letters all week while participating in events such as Quizzo, PowderPuff, a carnival, and more!   This semester, the theme of the week was “Camp Greek Week,” with special activities benefiting Camp Kesem, a free week-long summer camp  for children and families coping with cancer.  Snaps to Ally, who is in charge of organizing Camp Kesem’s activities this summer!

Kelsey, Renee, Sasha, Ece, Lindsay, Steph, Taylor, and Andrea put their game faces on for Powderpuff

Sisters make the best fans           Beta Alpha pride is hard to hide on campus, with so many sisters involved in so many different things!  From soccer games, to squash matches, to dance recitals, to a capella shows, our sisters are always center stage!

Beta Alpha comes out to cheer on Lainie, Maylynn, Jess, and Katie during their a capella show

Spring Fling            After a very long, cold winter, we couldn’t be more excited for Spring Fling!  Sisters flocked to the Quad for fried oreos during the daytime, and rocked out to David Guetta at night!  Best of all…the 70 and sunny skies!

Katherine, Leah, Kika, and Mallory enjoy the sunny spring day on the Quad!

Senior Toast          Chi Omegas love traditions, and Penn’s annual senior toast was the perfect way for our senior sisters to celebrate the end of classes and a job well done at Penn.

Meggie and Deepa give their senior toast.  We’ll miss you!!

Hey Day         While the seniors were toasting, the juniors were gathering before College Hall, eagerly awaiting Amy Gutmann’s official declaration of their new senior status!

Gracie, Lauren, Priscilla, Kelly, Elissa, Katy, and Charlotte are ready for Hey Day!

Formal Formal Formal          After months of secrecy and planning, formal chairs Serena and Leah unveiled their masterpiece….spring formal at Front & Palmer!

Graduation               With fling, formal, and finals come and gone, it was time for graduation weekend.  We are SO proud of all our seniors have accomplished, and couldn’t love them more.   You girls are epitome of “womanly always” and “discouraged never,” and have been such incredible role models both to your younger sisters and everyone lucky enough to know you.  We love you so much, and wish you all the best!

Congratulations on graduation, Sara and Serena!

Happy Graduation to Leah, Sarah, and Daisy!

Fall Semester Recap: Sisterhood, Philanthropy, Alumnae, and More!

Beta Alpha has had an absolutely amazing fall semester! From our first ever Mother-Daughter Tea to two successful Make-A-Wish fundraisers (#burritosforagoodcause, anyone?), we could not have asked for a better semester or be any prouder of our chapter. Read on to check out all of the wonderful things our sisters have been up to the past few months:)

In August, Beta Alpha held it’s first ever welcome back event at the house. We kicked off the semester with our sisters, free swag, and ice pops from Lil Pop Shop!

Fall continued to bring many “firsts” for our chapter.  In October, our Sisterhood Chairs organized a Mother-Daughter Tea over Penn Parents’ Weekend at the Dandelion restaurant in Center City!  The event was a huge success.  Attendees walked away with cute owl teacups, full bellies, and new friends!  Can you tell the mothers and daughters apart here?

Another semester highlight: Chi Omega Halloweentown!  Sisters sent invitations to secret “crushes” all over campus, who received special spooky invitations to the festivities downtown.  Everyone loved getting into the spirit of the holiday, coming up with some of Beta Alpha’s most creative costumes to date!

Throughout the fall semester, several of our sisters were hard at work training for the Philly Half Marathon!  In November, Beta Alpha showed off our athletic side as many of our sisters came out to cheer our ladies on at the 10 mile mark, waving signs and shouting encouragement for the final stretch!

Later in November, our chapter hosted the 3rd Annual Chisino Philanthropy Event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Generous donations from sponsors like Allegro’s Pizza, Neuro Drinks, and Chipotle helped make this event a huge success.  Sisters worked the tables as dealers as friends, fraternities, and other campus organizations came out to show their support.  Together, we raised over $2000 for Make-A-Wish!

Fall also brought our yearly trip to the New York City Penn Club to meet with Beta Alpha Alumnae.  Sisters were so excited to reunite with old friends and lineages, as well as to meet new sisters and learn about their lives and careers after Penn.

Beta Alpha wrapped up an incredible fall semester with winter formal at Hibachi Restaurant at Penn’s Landing. Our chapter was treated to music and dancing with Penn’s Mask & Wig Band, with special appearance vocals by our very own Swaroop Rao!

After a fantastic (and for many of us, very cold!) winter break, sisters were excited to reunite once more in January for a new semester.  With the first week of classes, also came Recruitment.  Rush is always a fun time to bond with sisters after weeks apart!  Recruitment chairs Cameron and Nicole worked tirelessly to ensure a fantastic experience.  We are SO excited to welcome PC’14 to the nest, and look forward to another semester of fun and firsts!

 LICO, Beta Alpha

This summer, our sisters gave new meaning to “Chi O Wherever You Go.” From internships in New York and vacations on the West Coast to European travels and African adventures, our sisters were all over the world. Many sisters traveled together and visited one another; some even met alumnae! We are so excited to share their journeys, experiences, and accomplishments! Laura Sorice, PC’13, Venice, Italy
This summer, I participated in the Penn in Venice summer abroad program along with 2 other Chi Os from my pledge class, Christine Lugrine and Angie Gonsalez! From taking classes in Italian language and history, exploring local cuisine, and taking trips to other cities like Rome and Florence, it was an amazing summer that we will never forget. I am so grateful that I had the chance to spend 6 weeks in such a beautiful city, and experiencing it together made it all the more worth while!

Christine, Laura, and Angie, PC’13

Sara Sodine, PC’11, Los Angeles, California
In May, I went on a 2-week trip to California with a fellow Chi O, Leah. We traveled to San Francisco, Yosemite, Los Angeles, and San Diego. We were lucky enough to visit Chi O sisters all along the way. Some highlights were visiting Stanford with Trina in Palo Alto, shopping at the LA flea market with Ally and Kay, and lying on the beach with Brigitte in San Diego. It was an unforgettable trip!

Cathryn Herbst, PC’12, Germany and the Czech Republic
Guten tag! Hallo, Ich studiere und arbeite in Deutschland. If that doesn’t make sense to you, don’t worry. It didn’t make sense to me a month ago either. Translation: I’m studying and working in Germany. I was fortunate enough to become one of the Ruhr Fellows this summer to represent Penn abroad and learn more about German engineering and business. All of this basically means that the once coal focused Ruhr region is transitioning to a research and industry region within Germany and wants the top talent to be a part of this industry growth. The Ruhr Fellowship program does just that by engaging engineers from Penn, Princeton, MIT, and Harvard through an academic-cultural experience followed by an internship at the top companies in the region. In June, I was able to travel a mile underground into a coal mine, see a newspaper production plant, watch a 200 ton pot of molten steel pass ten feet in front of me, and see myself in an article in Germany’s largest tabloid. This month in July I’ve been working at BP in the Global Fuels Technology location in Bochum, Germany on the Quality Assurance team. It’s been a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the business of a multi-national corporation.

Aside from all of the academic and professional activities, I’ve been able to travel with other participants in the program to both local German and Dutch towns and also see the big cities of Berlin, Vienna, and Prague. Although Prague was a nine hour train ride away, I trekked across the continent to see my cousin, a XO at Mizzou, who was studying abroad there in May. Through traveling, working, running, reading, cooking, and shopping in Germany I’ve been able to combine everything I love into a summer of epic proportions all based in a new culture to learn about the world and myself.

Daisy Daeschler, PC’11, Gaborone, Botswana
I have been living in Gaborone, Botswana for the last 2 months as part of Penn’s International Internship Program. I am interning at BONELA (the Botswana Network on Ethics, Law, and HIVV/AIDS), working on different projects concerning Children’s Rights and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights. I have been lucky enough also to be able to travel to the Kalahari Desert, Madikwe Game Reserve, Chobe Game Reserve, and Victoria Falls! It has been a great experience to live and work in Botswana, experiencing all it has to offer.
